Google has begun testing a “Buy” button on select Flipkart listings inside Gemini and Google Search’s AI Mode in India, in an early step toward making its AI assistants places to shop.

The test, first reported by TechCrunch on September 26, 2026, shows some users a Buy button on Flipkart product listings for smartphones, electronics and mobile accessories. Tapping it opens a Flipkart-branded checkout flow inside the AI interface, without switching to another app.

The pilot is limited to a small group of users. Amazon listings also appear in the same results but without a direct purchase option. Google plans a wider rollout later in October, timed ahead of India’s festive shopping season.

Google invested about $350 million in Flipkart in 2024 as part of a Walmart-led round. A Google spokesperson told TechCrunch the company is “always testing new features,” while Flipkart did not comment.

The move puts Google in direct competition with other AI platforms racing to add shopping to their chatbots. OpenAI and Perplexity have both experimented with commerce features, betting that users will complete purchases without leaving a conversation.
