At least 27 people were killed in two separate mass shootings in South Africa over the weekend. Gunmen struck a tavern near Johannesburg on Saturday night and a venue near Cape Town early on Sunday.

According to police, 17 people died in the Wedela township attack near Johannesburg, where eight gunmen opened fire on patrons. Hours later, 10 people were killed at a venue in Lwandle near Cape Town.

Dozens more were injured in the two attacks. Police launched manhunts for the suspects, and no arrests had been announced by Sunday, according to reports.

President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned the violence, calling it unacceptable. Authorities said the motives were still being established and investigations were underway.

South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world. The weekend attacks have renewed calls for tougher action against gun violence, and police urged witnesses to come forward. Funerals for the victims are expected this week.
