Sensex Crashes 1,124 Points as Brent Tops $108 a Barrel

The Sensex fell 1,124.02 points, or 1.52%, to close at 72,771.72 on September 28 — its lowest close since March 30. The Nifty 50 dropped 360.25 points, or 1.56%, to 22,780.25, with 47 of 50 Nifty constituents and 29 of 30 Sensex stocks lower; Infosys was the lone Sensex gainer. The index hit an intraday low of 72,716.23.
Brent crude jumping 3.81% to $108.3 a barrel amid the US-Iran stalemate over the Strait of Hormuz triggered the fall, with rising US bond yields, foreign fund outflows and weak Asian cues adding pressure. FIIs sold Rs 3,693.93 crore of equities on September 25, taking September’s outflow to about $1.8 billion; the rupee weakened 28 paise to 96.03 against the dollar.
Nifty PSU Bank fell 3.24%, the worst performer, followed by SmallCap 100 at 1.85%, MidCap 100 at 1.63%, Metal at 1.90%, Auto at 1.74% and FMCG at 1.38%.
Vikram Kasat of PL Capital said the sell-off reflected global macro pressures — Brent above $106, US 10-year yields near 5.2% and the rupee near 96 — rather than domestic weakness. An unverified wealth-erosion figure has been omitted.
