Sensex, Nifty tumble 1.5% in broad Monday sell-off

The Sensex plunged 1,124.02 points (1.52%) to close at 72,771.72 on Monday, Sept 28. The Nifty 50 shed 360.25 points (1.56%) to close at 22,780.25. Nifty PSU Bank was the worst-performing index, down 3.24%; the SmallCap 100 fell 1.85% and the MidCap 100 fell 1.63%.
Drivers cited across outlets included surging crude — Brent was around $106.7 per barrel in morning trade, up about 28% over the past month from $89.75 on Aug 28 — the US 10-year Treasury yield at 5.17%, persistent foreign capital outflows, and escalating Iran-US tensions.
The sell-off extended seven consecutive weekly declines for Indian equities and erased roughly Rs 6–6.9 lakh crore of BSE-listed market capitalisation, bringing total market cap to about Rs 476 lakh crore, per Outlook Money and Flash Finance.
Outlets cited surging crude oil prices, the 5.17% US 10-year Treasury yield, persistent foreign capital outflows and escalating Iran-US tensions as the forces behind Monday's broad decline.
