Artificial intelligence is now eliminating a net 16,000 US jobs every month, according to new Goldman Sachs research, with Generation Z workers absorbing the worst of the displacement. The bank's April 2026 report is the most precise accounting yet of AI's effect on American payrolls.

The headline figure hides sharper churn. Goldman estimates that AI substitution — systems directly replacing human work — wipes out about 25,000 jobs a month. AI augmentation, which creates new roles around the technology, adds back only around 9,000. That is roughly 2.8 jobs destroyed for every one created.

The pain is concentrated among entry-level white-collar workers, Goldman found after analysing employment growth across more than 800 occupations. Technology, management consulting, graphic design and customer service face the strongest headwinds. Unlike past automation waves that struck factories first, AI is disrupting the office before the factory floor.

Why it matters: this displacement is already happening, not a future risk. Whether AI's 9,000 new monthly roles can ever catch up with the 25,000 it removes will shape the careers of a generation entering work right now.
