Hur Jin-ho's period thriller The Assassin(s) topped the South Korean box office over the Chuseok weekend, according to the Korean Film Council. The film drew 1,119,156 admissions from Sept. 25 to 27.

Its cumulative total reached 1,566,222 admissions, with box office revenue of about $11 million. Starring Yoo Hae-jin, Park Hae-il and Lee Min-ho, the film opened Sept. 23 and passed 1 million admissions in four days, ZAPZEE reported.

The film reconstructs the investigation into the Aug. 15, 1974 assassination attempt on President Park Chung-hee that killed first lady Yuk Young-soo. A detective, a newspaper editor and a rookie reporter pursue missing ballistic evidence that contradicts the official verdict.

Tazza: The Song of Beelzebub debuted second with 566,526 weekend admissions and $4.1 million. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey held third with $3.2 million in its eighth weekend, according to KOBIS data cited by multiple outlets.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before its domestic release. Strong advance ticket sales and the holiday weekend drove its opening.
