Resident Evil Tops $100M Domestic, Breaks Franchise Record
Zach Cregger's Resident Evil reboot added $23.3 million at the domestic box office in its second weekend, according to BoxOfficeReport.com. The film's domestic total now stands at an estimated $103.4 million.
That makes it the highest-grossing domestic entry in the franchise's 24-year history. The previous best was 2010's Resident Evil: Afterlife, which earned $60.1 million domestically, according to FandomWire.
The film opened to $60 million domestically and $108.3 million worldwide on Sept. 18. Worldwide, the reboot has reached about $196 million, with China opening Oct. 5 and Japan on Oct. 9, according to Dread Central.
Critics have embraced the reboot. The film holds a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest for a video game movie on the site, FandomWire reported. Previous live-action Resident Evil films scored below 40%.
Sony's gamble on Cregger, the director of Barbarian and Weapons, has paid off early. The reboot already beat the entire $41.9 million global run of 2021's Welcome to Raccoon City, according to Screen Rant.
