Senate Passes Funding Bill, DHS Gets Two-Week Stopgap

The U.S. Senate approved a federal spending package late Friday by a 71-29 vote, hours before a midnight funding deadline. The bill funds most government operations but gives the Department of Homeland Security only a two-week extension while lawmakers negotiate rules for immigration enforcement.

The compromise came after Senate Democrats refused to back full-year DHS funding. They changed course after federal agents fatally shot 37-year-old U.S. citizen Alex Pretti during a protest in Minneapolis last Saturday, according to multiple reports.

Democrats now want limits on immigration agents, including body cameras, visible identification, and bans on roving patrols. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who helped negotiate the deal, said it delivered what Democrats wanted. President Donald Trump also backed the package, saying he did not want another long shutdown.

The measure now goes to the House, which returns Monday. Speaker Mike Johnson must push it through a slim Republican majority. The government will stay partially unfunded through the weekend, with federal agencies under furlough guidance.

The House vote will decide whether Washington avoids a damaging shutdown just weeks before the midterm elections.
