Student protests at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara turned violent over the weekend of September 26-27, 2026. The unrest was triggered by allegations circulating among students and on social media that a female student had been sexually assaulted on campus. The allegation itself remains unconfirmed and is under investigation.

The unrest involved vandalism and damage to university property, arson, clashes between students and police, and a blockade of the Jalandhar-Phagwara National Highway. Police have registered an FIR in connection with the alleged assault. According to The Daily Jagran, a rape case was registered against an unknown person based on a complaint by students.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to investigate the case. LPU has rejected the allegations as false, baseless and fabricated. Its executive dean attributed the campus vandalism to "anti-social elements from outside" rather than students, describing the episode as "rumour rage."

The university has suspended regular classes for 10 days from September 28, 2026. Mid-term examinations have been postponed until further notice. Students were advised they may travel home; those staying on campus must remain inside hostels.

Authorities are also investigating the violence and possible involvement of outsiders in the campus unrest.
