Fight Infractions in NYC Jails Spiked 76% Amid Federal Takeover

New York City's jail system recorded a sharp rise in fight and assault infractions last year. The Department of Correction issued 15,035 fight and assault infractions in the fiscal year ending June 30, up from 8,528 the year before — a roughly 76% spike, according to the annual Mayor's Management Report reported by the NY Post.

Jail-based arrests of people already in custody rose 8%, from 436 to 469, the Post reported. Assaults on staff by detainees also increased nearly 5%, though serious violent incidents and serious inmate injuries improved overall.

The spike coincided with a federal takeover of the jail system. In January, Manhattan federal Judge Laura Taylor Swain stripped operational oversight from the Department of Correction and appointed former Vermont corrections chief Nicholas Deml as an independent remediation manager, according to the Post and 710 WOR.

Swain acted after finding the city in civil contempt for failing to carry out core safety reforms after a decade of court monitoring, which had flagged unsanitary conditions and excessive force.

Deml ordered expanded misconduct investigations and a $50 million programming increase as he works to steady the system.
