Senate Republicans chose to return to Washington next week to vote on the Ratepayer Protection Act at the behest of Sen. Jon Husted, rather than departing until after the Nov 3 midterm election. The move aims to show commitment to voters hit by cost-of-living pressures, Reuters reported.

The bill, introduced by Husted, would require data centers — large computing facilities powering AI and cloud services — to pay the full utility cost needed to serve them. It would prevent rate hikes for ratepayers in communities with data-center development. The House passed it 417-3 on Sept 16.

Reuters reports the vote reflects Republican anxiety over Trump's record-low approval less than six weeks before Election Day. Polls show broad opposition to data centers despite Trump's support for their development.

"Nebraskans should not be responsible for footing the bill of data centers," Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-NE, said in a press release. Context: with affordability dominating voter concerns, the vote is Republicans' latest attempt to tie Democrats to rising household costs.
