A record 66 million pounds in emergency security funding was issued by the UK Home Office for mosques and related community sites after violent disorder spread following the 2024 Southport attacks. The figures were obtained by The Guardian through a freedom of information request.

Of almost 69 million pounds distributed to places of worship under the emergency scheme, about 66 million went to mosques and associated sites, per the figures.

Separately, about 41 million pounds in security funding was issued to mosques, Islamic faith schools and associated sites in the year to April 2026 under the protective security scheme. That is a record, up from 73,147 pounds in 2016-17, about 3 million in 2022-23 and 29 million in 2024-25.

British Muslim Trust chief executive Akeela Ahmed said the figures "tell an incredibly sombre story about the rise in anti-Muslim hostility that British Muslims are living with." The trust reported in July that a mosque was attacked on average every five days across Britain in the previous year. Context: the figures underline how security needs have risen sharply alongside reported attacks on Muslim sites.
