Ahmedabad: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday inaugurated and flagged off railway projects worth more than Rs 1,542 crore in Gujarat, according to reports.

The package includes India’s first LNG-powered train, flagged off from Sabarmati railway station. The train uses a diesel-plus-LNG dual-fuel system with two converted 1,400 HP driving power cars, and has completed more than 2,000 km of field trials.

Shah also inaugurated a Rs 700-crore maintenance shed at Sabarmati for WAG-12 electric locomotives. Railway authorities say 154 of the 12,000 HP locomotives are already homed at the facility, which can handle up to 300 by 2027-28.

The projects include the indigenous Kavach safety system across 404 km of the Ahmedabad division at a cost of about Rs 411 crore, automatic block signalling over 122.57 km at Rs 118.83 crore, and the doubling of the 21-km Sabarmati-Sarkhej line.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi attended the programme.

The upgrades aim to cut fuel costs and emissions while raising freight capacity and train safety.
