The Palestinian death toll in Gaza has passed 74,000, Gaza’s Health Ministry said on September 27. The ministry put the toll at 74,016 dead and 175,068 injured since the war began on October 7, 2023. The ministry does not distinguish between civilians and fighters. It says women and children make up about half of the dead. Since a U.S.-brokered ceasefire took effect last October, 1,145 Palestinians have been killed, the ministry said. Israeli strikes have continued in what the military calls responses to threats. In Gaza City, a strike hit a car and killed one person on Saturday, Shifa Hospital said. In Khan Younis, another strike killed one person and wounded three, Nasser Hospital said. Seven Israeli soldiers have also been killed since the ceasefire. The ceasefire remains largely stalled. Israeli forces control over half of Gaza, Hamas has not disarmed, and reconstruction has not begun. Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced nearly 710 million euros in new global humanitarian support. Of that, 103 million euros will go to vulnerable populations in the Palestinian territories and Lebanon.
