India’s youth-led Cockroach Janta Party has threatened nationwide protests from October 2 if Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar does not resign, founder Abhijeet Dipke said. The group gave Kumar 48 hours to quit on September 24. Dipke said the agitation would begin in Mumbai on Gandhi Jayanti and then spread to other cities. The demand follows a report in The Indian Express that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi raised objections about voter-list changes at least 14 times over 10 months. Opposition parties have accused the Election Commission of deleting and adding voter names without proper checks. The Commission has said internal differences are normal in a multi-member body and that its actions were lawful. Dipke launched an “Election Commission Thik Karo” campaign with co-convenors Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka. The group wants an independent review of voter registration, deletion and restoration decisions. It also seeks publication of records of excluded voters and related appeals. The Election Commission has not said whether Kumar plans to respond to the ultimatum.
