New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell resigned on September 25 after an independent investigation found he behaved inappropriately with women and committed ethical violations, Governor Mikie Sherrill said. Sherrill had called on Thursday for Caldwell to step down. A 61-page report found he made sexually offensive remarks to female staff members, investigators said. Caldwell denied the remarks, but investigators did not find his denial credible. The report also said he pushed for a promotion for a state employee with whom he had a romantic relationship, and brought personal guests to ticketed events without paying. Sherrill, also a Democrat, said Caldwell engaged in serious repeated violations of state policy. Caldwell said his resignation should not be read as acceptance of the findings. His attorney said they would challenge the report through legal remedies. Sherrill named Shirley Emehelu as acting secretary of state, a post Caldwell also held. She said she would decide on a permanent replacement within 45 days. Caldwell had been Sherrill’s running mate in the 2025 election.
