US President Donald Trump said on Sunday he expects US negotiators to hold further talks with Iran this week. He told Axios that Tehran had not yet offered terms acceptable to Washington. Trump added that military strikes against Iran remained an option.

The remarks followed Trump's rejection on Saturday of an Iranian proposal made through mediators. Reports said Tehran offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume nuclear talks within a week. In return, Iran wanted Washington to lift its naval blockade, waive oil sanctions and restore a regional ceasefire.

The two sides held indirect talks through mediators last week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. It was their first such meeting in months, US officials said. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the talks as good and said Washington was open to more.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told Al Jazeera his country no longer trusts direct talks. He said Qatar and Pakistan were relaying Tehran's messages to the US. Trump did not name a venue for the next round. The stakes remain high: the countries have been at war since February, and reopening the strait would ease global markets, US officials said.
