Mirabai Chanu Wins Silver at Asian Games 2026
India's Mirabai Chanu won silver in the women's 49kg weightlifting event at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya on September 23. It is her first Asian Games medal.
Chanu lifted 87kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk, finishing with a total of 198kg. The silver also ended India's 28-year wait for an Asian Games weightlifting medal, the last coming from Karnam Malleswari in 1998.
After the event, Chanu said she felt her life was complete. She had finished ninth at Incheon 2014 and missed the podium at the 2023 Hangzhou Games, where an injury left her fourth.
The 32-year-old's silver completes her collection of major international medals, adding the Asian Games to her Olympic, World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Asian Championships honours.
Her result took India's medal tally at the Games to 11, with shooters and shuttlers also contributing on a busy Day 5 of competition.
