The India Meteorological Department has issued fresh rain alerts for Monday, September 28, with heavy rainfall expected across Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and parts of the Northeast. Alerts cover about 14 states in all.

A depression over northeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Chhattisgarh is driving the rain. Isolated heavy downpours are likely in Uttarakhand, while East and West Uttar Pradesh may also see heavy rain. Strong winds of 40 to 50 kmph are forecast in the Northeast.

The alert follows a red alert for Uttarakhand on Sunday, when extremely heavy rain lashed Dehradun, Tehri, Haridwar and Pauri. The Char Dham Yatra, a major Hindu pilgrimage, was suspended because of the weather.

In the hills, snowfall was reported in Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh. Yellow alerts are in place for seven states on Monday, including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Travellers should expect waterlogging, lightning and possible road blocks in hilly areas, and keep track of district-level nowcasts through the day.
