Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced his resignation on September 27, ending his second and final five-year term seven months early. He told supporters outside the presidency building in Belgrade that he plans to run for prime minister in the October 25 snap parliamentary election.

Under Serbia's constitution, outgoing parliament speaker Ana Brnabic will serve as interim president until a new one is elected. The presidential election must be completed within 90 days, with the first round expected by the end of December.

Vucic's resignation follows nearly two years of student-led protests. The movement began after a train station canopy collapsed in Novi Sad in November 2024, killing 16 people. Protesters blamed corruption and government failures for the disaster.

The October 25 vote will test Vucic's grip on power after 12 years as either president or prime minister. His Serbian Progressive Party will face a student-backed movement and pro-Western opposition parties. The outcome could reshape Serbia's ties with the European Union.
