Virat Kohli became only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to reach 15,000 ODI runs, smashing an unbeaten 139 off 88 balls as India beat West Indies by eight wickets in the first ODI at Thiruvananthapuram on September 27.

India chased 296 in 41.4 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Kohli reached the landmark during his 55th ODI century, his 86th in international cricket. Captain Shubman Gill scored 110 off 108 balls, and the pair added 151 runs for the second wicket.

West Indies had posted 295 after Justin Greaves hit a maiden ODI century and shared a 135-run opening stand with John Campbell. Kuldeep Yadav took 4 for 40 on his ODI return, while Amir Jangoo's 58 off 43 balls lifted the visitors late.

Kohli got to 15,000 runs in his 303rd ODI innings, far quicker than Tendulkar's 377. With Gill also in fine form, India will look to seal the series in the remaining two matches.
