President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Food and Drug Administration told senators on September 24 that the MMR vaccine is safe. Heidi Overton’s statement directly contradicted the president’s earlier claim that the shot could be “potentially lethal.”

“The MMR vaccine is not lethal,” Overton told the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. “It is safe and effective.” She added that every vaccine currently on the U.S. market is safe and effective under FDA standards.

The measles, mumps and rubella vaccine has been central to the hearing. Senate Chair Bill Cassidy, a physician, opened questioning by asking whether the vaccine is lethal. Cassidy had earlier called the president’s claim “absurd.”

On the abortion drug mifepristone, Overton said the medication has met FDA safety and efficacy standards. She noted an ongoing safety review and declined to pre-judge its outcome.

Overton also said she has seen no evidence that Tylenol use during pregnancy causes autism, another claim the president has promoted. She repeatedly declined to say whether the president was wrong, saying he “sets the policy directions.”

Cassidy declined after the hearing to say whether he would support her nomination or hold a confirmation vote this year.
