No Longer ‘Regional’: How India’s Film Industries Conquered the National Audience

For most of Indian cinema’s history, “national cinema” meant one thing: Bollywood. Films made in Hindi from Mumbai travelled the country; films in other languages stayed home, politely labelled “regional”. That hierarchy has now collapsed. In 2026, cinema made in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi and other languages regularly opens across India, wins the biggest weekends of the year, and sets the box-office records that the whole industry chases.
The numbers tell the story. India’s domestic box office crossed 5,373 crore rupees in just the first seven months of 2026, according to industry data, with Hindi films taking 43 per cent of collections — and the rest spread across regional industries. Telugu cinema commands around 17 to 18 per cent, Tamil around 13 per cent, and Malayalam roughly 7 to 10 per cent. The previous calendar year, 2025, was the highest-grossing in Indian cinema’s history at about 13,395 crore rupees, with the four big South industries together accounting for nearly 44 per cent of it. “Regional” is no longer a smaller category; it is nearly half the market.
How the shift happened
The turning point arrived a decade ago with films that refused to think of themselves as regional at all. Baahubali (2015–17) was a Telugu blockbuster that stormed Hindi-speaking markets in dubbed versions. RRR (2022) took the idea global, winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song and packing theatres from Tokyo to Los Angeles. KGF (2018–22) did it for Kannada cinema, and Kantara: A Legend Chapter-1, which collected over 850 crore rupees worldwide, became the highest-grossing Indian film of 2025 on the strength of coastal Karnataka’s Bhoota Kola folklore.
Since then, the hits have kept coming from every corner
Telugu-Tamil bilingual Irumudi grossed about 175 crore rupees in just 15 days of 2026. Suriya’s Tamil action-devotional Karuppu crossed 300 crore worldwide. Malayalam cinema delivered its biggest year ever with Vaazha 2, made on a 10-crore budget and grossing over 235 crore worldwide to become the most profitable Indian film of 2026 at that point, alongside Mohanlal’s Drishyam 3, which crossed 239 crore. Even a 3-crore Kannada horror-comedy, Su From So, collected around 120 crore — proof that modest budgets and good storytelling now beat star power alone.
Why audiences outside the home state are watching
Three forces power the crossover. First, dubbing and multi-language releases have made every big regional film a pan-India event from day one. Second, streaming platforms trained audiences in the metros to watch Malayalam thrillers and Tamil dramas with subtitles, building a taste for stories rooted in other cultures. Third, and most importantly, the storytelling itself: regional industries leaned into hyper-local culture, myth and emotion rather than imitating glossy Western aesthetics — and paradoxically, the more local they went, the further they travelled.
Hindi cinema, meanwhile, has found itself squeezed. Its 2026 share has been driven by a handful of tentpoles, while regional films and Hollywood releases between them account for the majority of collections. As cinema-chain executives have noted, regional cinema’s contribution to admissions is expected to keep rising.
The new map of Indian cinema
- Telugu: the biggest regional industry by share, home of the pan-India spectacle — Baahubali, RRR, and 2026 hits like Peddi and Irumudi.
- Tamil: around 13 per cent of the domestic market, powered by star-led blockbusters such as Karuppu and Jana Nayagan.
- Malayalam: the content powerhouse — smaller budgets, acclaimed writing, and 2026 phenomena like Vaazha 2 and Drishyam 3.
- Kannada: punching far above its weight since KGF and Kantara, with breakout small films like Su From So.
- Marathi and others: quieter but growing, with 2026 releases like Deool Band 2 driving strong local years.
The word “regional” once described a limitation. Today it describes an advantage: the closer a film is to its own soil, the louder it echoes across the country.
