The European Union has pledged 52 million euros for Ukraine to prepare for winter. The funding is part of a nearly 710 million euro global aid package announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. She unveiled the package during the 81st UN General Assembly high-level week in New York on Saturday, September 26. The announcement came after the Global Citizen Festival was cancelled. The Ukraine funding will cover humanitarian aid and emergency preparedness. That includes winterization, shelter, essential services, and energy-related emergency support ahead of the cold season. The wider package comes from the EU’s Emergency Aid Reserve. It needs budgetary authority approval. Sub-Saharan Africa gets 380 million euros for migration measures plus 97 million euros for humanitarian needs. Palestine and Lebanon receive 103 million euros. The Democratic Republic of Congo gets 7.5 million euros for the Ebola response. Another 10 million euros supports peace and stability in the Great Lakes region. The Commission also announced 60 million euros for primary healthcare in Ethiopia. Von der Leyen said conflicts, extreme weather, and rising living costs are disrupting lives around the world. Her message was simple: Europe stands with you.
