At least 19 people were killed and several went missing after heavy rain triggered floods and landslides across India and Nepal, officials said on Sunday.

In Uttar Pradesh, 15 people died and five were injured over two days, with 117 houses damaged across 63 districts, Reuters reported. The state received nearly 19 times its normal rainfall in the 24 hours to Saturday. Officials said updated figures later on Sunday suggested a higher toll.

In Nepal, a landslide buried a house in Nishi Khola village in Baglung district while a family slept, killing four people, including three children. A separate avalanche buried the base camp of Himlung Himal in Manang district, where Nepali workers were setting up tents for foreign climbers.

Rescue teams are searching for the missing, though authorities gave conflicting figures for how many workers are unaccounted for.

India’s Central Water Commission said 30 river monitoring stations across seven states were in a severe situation, with the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati and Narmada flowing above danger levels. Nepal’s disaster authority warned of possible flash floods in 49 of the country’s 77 districts.

Search and rescue efforts were continuing in the worst-hit areas, officials said.
