India has strongly rejected a reference to Jammu and Kashmir in a communique issued by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), declaring that the grouping has “no locus standi” to comment on matters that are entirely internal to India.

The sharp response continues New Delhi’s long-standing policy of dismissing OIC statements on Kashmir as unwarranted interference. India has consistently maintained that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inalienable part of the country.

New Delhi’s Firm Stand

The “no locus standi” formulation is among the strongest diplomatic rebukes in India’s vocabulary, signalling that New Delhi does not recognise the OIC’s standing to pronounce on the issue at all. Indian officials have used similar language in the past to brush aside OIC resolutions on Kashmir.

The communique in question is reported to have been issued around the UN General Assembly session, where leaders including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have in the past raised the Kashmir issue — drawing repeated protests from India.

A Recurring Flashpoint

The OIC has periodically issued statements on Jammu and Kashmir that India rejects outright. New Delhi’s position is that the OIC’s comments are driven by a single member state’s agenda rather than a genuine multilateral concern, and that the grouping’s pronouncements have no bearing on the ground reality.

India also points to the democratic processes in Jammu and Kashmir, including recent elections, as evidence that the region’s political future is being decided by its own people.

Diplomatic Implications

While the exchange is unlikely to alter the OIC’s stance, India’s firm rejection serves a dual purpose: reassuring a domestic audience that sovereignty is non-negotiable, and putting on record — at the UN and beyond — that New Delhi will not entertain third-party mediation or commentary on Kashmir.

The episode underscores how Kashmir remains a recurring irritant in India’s engagement with the Muslim-majority grouping, even as New Delhi deepens bilateral ties with several OIC member states individually.
