Union Home Minister Amit Shah has set a firm deadline for one of India’s toughest challenges, declaring that the fight against drugs, “the most difficult of all battles”, cannot be abandoned and must be won by December 31, 2029. The statement lays down a clear target for enforcement agencies and state governments alike.

How Big Is India’s Drug Challenge

India’s drug problem spans the full spectrum, from cross-border trafficking networks feeding narcotics into border states, to the growing abuse of synthetic drugs and pharmaceutical opioids in cities and towns. Enforcement agencies have been seizing record quantities of contraband in recent years, a sign both of intensified crackdowns and of the sheer scale of the trade.

The human cost is starkest among the young. Addiction tears through families, fuels petty crime and overwhelms rehabilitation infrastructure that remains patchy across much of the country. Experts stress that supply-side enforcement, however aggressive, must be matched by demand reduction, treatment and social support.

The Road to 2029

The 2029 deadline gives agencies a defined horizon to dismantle trafficking networks, choke financing channels and strengthen coordination between central agencies and state police forces. The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, the government’s flagship de-addiction campaign, is expected to play a central role on the prevention and rehabilitation front.

Whether the target is achievable will depend on sustained political will and resources long after headlines fade. But by naming a date, Shah has turned an open-ended struggle into a measurable mission, one against which the government’s record will ultimately be judged.

States have been asked to align their anti-narcotics machinery with the national mission, with an emphasis on intelligence-sharing and coordinated operations against trafficking syndicates. Rehabilitation centres and de-addiction helplines are also being expanded, recognising that enforcement alone cannot win what is ultimately a battle for lives. The countdown to December 2029 has now officially begun.
