What is NavIC and why the NVS-03 launch matters

NavIC is India’s own satellite navigation system. It works like GPS but is built and run by India. ISRO operates the system for use across the country and the nearby region.
A navigation system needs at least four working satellites for full service. Right now NavIC has only three fully operational satellites. The NVS-02 satellite failed in January 2025, leaving a gap in coverage.
That is why the NVS-03 launch matters. Reports say it could fly between October 15 and 20 on the GSLV-F18 rocket from Sriharikota. It carries an indigenous rubidium atomic clock. Such clocks keep navigation signals accurate to the metre.
If the launch succeeds, NavIC will return to full strength. The system is used in transport, mapping and strategic sectors. It also reduces India’s dependence on foreign navigation signals in a crisis.
NavIC signals cover India and up to 1,500 km beyond its borders. The system is free for civilian use. ISRO plans to add more satellites in the coming years.
