French students keep up protests despite government sops

Student protests in France are continuing despite concessions from the government. Student unions said the measures announced so far do not go far enough.
Education Minister Edouard Geffray is contacting 3,000 spare teachers to fill gaps in schools. The unions want more hiring and better pay for staff. Fresh strikes have been called for next Tuesday.
The protests began over working conditions and staffing shortages. Students have joined teachers in marches across several cities. The government said it is open to further talks.
Observers said the standoff could disrupt the school term if it drags on. Both sides have so far refused to back down. Parents’ groups urged a quick settlement.
The protests have drawn support from university students as well. Unions said school overcrowding has worsened this year. The government promised a detailed staffing plan before the winter break. Talks are expected to resume next week. Education unions in neighbouring countries are watching the outcome closely.
