Five dead after building collapse in Delhi’s Seemapuri

The death toll in the Seemapuri building collapse in east Delhi has risen to five. Rescue teams on Thursday pulled out two more bodies from the rubble. The victims were identified as Nusrat, also known as Guria, and Hajra Bibi.
The building collapsed around 3:30 pm on October 7. Among the dead are Gulafsa, 21, who was four months pregnant, a 12-year-old girl and a child aged about one and a half years. Eight people were injured in the incident.
NDRF teams and local rescue workers searched the debris through the night. Officials said demolition work at an adjacent plot may have weakened the structure. Cracks caused by the recent Chamoli earthquake are also being examined as a possible factor.
Delhi government officials visited the site and promised help to the affected families. A probe has been ordered into the collapse. Police said they are checking whether the building had the required permissions and safety clearances. Residents of nearby buildings have been asked to stay alert.
