India calls Vance’s ‘indentured servants’ remark deeply offensive

India has strongly rebuked US Vice President JD Vance for describing Indian professionals as indentured servants. The Ministry of External Affairs called the remarks deeply offensive on October 9.
Vance had urged US companies to stop importing an indentured servant to do jobs Americans would happily do. The MEA said such descriptions are unwarranted and ignore the fact that Indian professionals are highly educated contributors to the US economy and innovation ecosystem.
The statement said resorting to terminology with painful historical and colonial connotations is deeply offensive. It noted that generations of immigrants have shaped America's growth and prosperity through their labour and enterprise.
The MEA also responded to the US Labour Department's suspension of some IT firms, including Microsoft and Adobe, from the PERM green card programme. It said talent mobility benefits both countries and the move does not advance shared ambitions.
The remarks come amid a wider US crackdown on alleged H-1B visa abuse. India said skilled worker movement creates jobs and wealth for US shareholders too.
