Air India, Akasa raise fuel surcharge as ATF prices soar

Air travel is set to cost more this festive season. Air India, Air India Express and Akasa Air have raised fuel surcharges on domestic and international flights from October 9.
Air India will charge Rs 400 to Rs 1,200 on domestic sectors based on distance. International surcharges range from $55 for West Asia to $215 for North America. Akasa Air will levy Rs 375 to Rs 1,150 on domestic routes and Rs 2,500 on select Gulf and Southeast Asia flights.
The hikes follow IndiGo's increase earlier this week. IndiGo said aviation turbine fuel prices rose more than 14 per cent in September, pushing fuel costs to their highest in a decade. Delhi ATF now costs Rs 137 a litre, up from Rs 121 on October 1.
Fuel makes up 30 to 40 per cent of an airline's variable costs. Airlines blame geopolitical tensions in West Asia and volatile global energy markets.
The new charges apply only to fresh bookings. Flyers who booked earlier keep their original fares unless they change their itinerary.
