Only 4% Of Indian Jobs At AI Risk, Says World Bank

Slightly over 4% of jobs in India are at risk of disruption from artificial intelligence, far below the mid-teens share in most developed economies, World Bank Group Executive Director Neelkanth Mishra said on October 8. Speaking to ANI at the India launch of the World Development Report 2026 alongside the IndiaAI Mission, Mishra said the report sees AI as a technology that can support workers rather than replace them.
Developing economies face lower job-loss risk while gaining similar productivity benefits to advanced economies, the report found. Mishra cited India’s digital public infrastructure like Aadhaar, UPI and CoWIN as examples of technology delivering services at scale. He noted AI is already used in weather forecasting for farmers, sugarcane yields and large-scale TB diagnosis.
Wider adoption, he said, needs energy access and complementary skills. Mishra said making sure workers have complementary skills, like basic arithmetic and language ability, is important for using AI. He also stressed balanced regulation so AI benefits reach workers across the economy.
