Tata Power Ties Up With Norway’s Ocean Sun for Floating Solar

Tata Power has partnered with Norway-based renewable energy company Ocean Sun to bring membrane-based floating solar technology to India.
The collaboration agreement was signed on the sidelines of the second India-EFTA Prosperity Summit, reinforcing India-Norway and India-EFTA cooperation in clean energy.
The two companies will undertake a 300 kWp floating solar pilot at Tata Power’s Mulshi reservoir in Maharashtra. The pilot will evaluate the technology for performance, reliability, cost competitiveness and scalability under Indian conditions.
Unlike conventional floating solar systems that use pontoons, Ocean Sun’s technology places solar modules on a thin hydro-elastic membrane that floats directly on the water surface. The lightweight design could simplify installation and reduce structural requirements.
India has an estimated 102 GWp of floating solar potential, according to the National Institute of Solar Energy. The Centre recently announced incentives of up to Rs 1 crore per MW for floating solar plants. The pilot will be watched closely by the sector as a test of whether membrane technology can work at scale in Indian conditions.
