Atsena gene therapy shows promise in blindness trial

Atsena Therapeutics has reported sustained benefit from its ATSN-201 gene therapy in a trial for X-linked retinoschisis, an inherited condition that causes vision loss.
The therapy is designed to deliver a working copy of the faulty gene behind the disease, which affects the retina's ability to process light. Patients in the trial showed durable improvements, according to company-reported data.
Inherited retinal diseases like XLRS have few treatment options, and gene therapy is among the most closely watched approaches. A one-time treatment that restores gene function could change the outlook for patients who today face progressive blindness.
The results are still early and come from the company itself, so independent verification and larger trials will be needed. Regulators will want to see long-term safety data before any approval.
Still, for families affected by rare inherited blindness, each positive readout matters. Atsena's update adds to growing evidence that gene therapy is finding its footing in eye disease.
