Kenya Traces 28 Contacts After First Ebola Death

Kenyan health authorities have identified 28 contacts of the country’s first imported Ebola case, as they race to contain any spread. The contacts include family members and health workers, and are being monitored or placed under quarantine.
The patient, a Kenyan citizen who had lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo for seven years, fell ill about a month ago. He travelled by road to Kampala, Uganda, then flew to Nairobi on Jambojet flight JM8523 on October 3. He died in a Nairobi hospital on the night of October 5.
Laboratory tests confirmed the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which there are no approved vaccines or treatments. Authorities are also tracing 23 passengers and four crew members who were on the same flight from Entebbe.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said Kenya has screened 652,584 travellers and tested 267 samples since heightened surveillance began in May, with only this case returning positive. The World Health Organization has been notified and is supporting Kenya’s response.
