Rahul, Priyanka Gandhi Detained In CEC Protest Row

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were detained for the second consecutive day on Wednesday as INDIA bloc MPs tried to reach Jantar Mantar in Delhi, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The confrontation is over the Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls. On Tuesday, a march from Parliament to the Election Commission was stopped, and MPs staged a nine-hour sit-in at Akashvani Bhawan — about 260 people were detained. On Wednesday, police stopped buses heading to Jantar Mantar and detained about 91 opposition leaders and workers.
Priyanka Gandhi alleged that women police personnel manhandled her during the detention; the allegations are disputed. Rahul Gandhi said the protest would continue until their concerns were heard, and accused top BJP and RSS leaders of having “destroyed the democracy of the country.”
The campaign entered its third day on Thursday, which Congress called a “Black Day” for Indian democracy, with protests called across states. The party announced a “Save Vote, Save Country” block-level campaign from October 10 to 20, a rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1, and “Chalo Delhi” marches converging on Constitution Day, November 26.
