Kenya Races To Trace Contacts After First Ebola Death

Kenya has recorded its first-ever Ebola death. A Kenyan man who lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo fell ill about a month ago, travelled overland to Uganda’s capital Kampala, and flew to Nairobi on October 3. He died in a Nairobi hospital on October 5.
Health Minister Aden Duale announced the case on October 6. The man tested positive for the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there are no approved vaccines or treatments. Authorities have identified 28 contacts, including family members, health workers and fellow flight passengers.
The man passed airport health screening, possibly because treatment in the DRC had masked his symptoms, officials said. He was taken straight to Nairobi Hospital with fever, chills and bleeding beneath the skin.
The DRC is fighting its 17th Ebola outbreak, declared in mid-May, with over 8,000 cases and 4,000 deaths. WHO’s Kenya representative Dr Neema Rusibamayila Kimambo said the coming days would be decisive in preventing community spread.
