Nobel Economics Prize on Monday: What We Know So Far

The final Nobel of 2026 will be announced on Monday, October 12. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences will name the winner of the Prize in Economic Sciences.
Prediction markets have Harvard professor Ariel Pakes as the early favourite, with about a 22 per cent chance. Stanford’s Susan Athey and UCL’s Richard Blundell follow.
The economics prize was established by Sweden’s central bank in 1968 in memory of Alfred Nobel. It is announced last in the Nobel week calendar.
This week’s earlier prizes went to optogenetics researchers in Medicine, Francis Halzen in Physics for high-energy neutrinos, Henri Kagan and Kenso Soai in Chemistry, and Anne Carson in Literature.
The Peace Prize is being announced today in Oslo. The winner will be named at 11 am CEST, or 2:30 pm IST, by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
Each prize carries 12 million Swedish kronor, about 1.2 million dollars. The amount was raised by 1 million kronor this year as the Nobel marks its 125th anniversary.
