Andhra Pradesh Declares Drought in 21 Districts

Andhra Pradesh has declared drought in 21 districts after the state recorded a rainfall deficit of 53.4 per cent. The declaration opens the door to relief measures for affected farmers and households.
The southwest monsoon began withdrawing from India on September 19, but the seasonal rains left large parts of the state short. Officials said the deficit has hit kharif sowing and water storage levels in several districts.
A formal drought declaration allows the state to seek central assistance, roll out employment support and begin fodder and drinking-water supply programmes. District administrations have been asked to assess crop damage and submit reports.
The state government is expected to send a memorandum to the Centre seeking relief funds. Andhra Pradesh is among the states where this season’s rainfall shortfall has been most severe.
The announcement comes as weather systems continue to bring scattered showers across parts of the country even after the monsoon’s withdrawal.
