Rybakina withdraws from Wuhan Open with foot injury

World number one Elena Rybakina has withdrawn from the Wuhan Open with a foot injury, days after a shock defeat at the China Open.
Tournament organisers announced the withdrawal on Sunday. The Wuhan Open, the final WTA 1000 event of the season, runs from October 12 to 18.
Rybakina lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to world number 118 Alina Charaeva in her opening match in Beijing — her first match as world number one. Charaeva became the lowest-ranked player since 1975 to rally from a set down to beat the top-ranked player.
The 27-year-old has been managing a lingering lower leg and foot problem that also forced her to retire from her Cincinnati quarter-final in August. ‘I’m very sorry to the fans who were looking forward to seeing me play,’ she said. ‘I’ll take some time to rest and recover.’
Rybakina, who won the US Open and rose to number one, is next expected to play in Ningbo, where she defends her title. She has already qualified for the season-ending WTA Finals.
