Google launches Playground, turning prompts into games

Google has launched Playground, an experimental platform that turns plain-language text prompts into playable browser games, no coding required.

Playground opened on October 7 for users aged 18 and older in the US. Users type a game concept, and the system builds it: they can pick 2D or 3D, single or multiplayer, then refine physics, rules and art style through conversation. Finished games run in the browser on phones and laptops.

The platform runs on Google’s Gemini, Nano Banana and Lyria models. Games can stay private, be shared by link or published to the Playground Explore gallery, with leaderboards for qualifying titles. Creation runs on a weekly token system, with higher limits for Google One subscribers.

Google is partnering with Unity on a more advanced tier, Unity Spark, with a closed beta planned later in 2026 to bring professional 3D tools and the Unity Asset Store.

The launch rattled markets: Roblox shares fell as much as 8 per cent in premarket trading on the announcement.
