Samsung flags 783% profit jump on AI memory boom

Samsung Electronics expects third-quarter operating profit of 107.4 trillion won, about $80 billion, up 783 per cent from a year earlier, on surging demand for AI memory chips.
Revenue is projected at 195 trillion won, up 126.6 per cent year-on-year, implying an operating margin of roughly 55 per cent. The figures would make Samsung the first tech company to cross 100 trillion won in quarterly profit.
The boom is driven by tight supplies of conventional DRAM and NAND memory and high-bandwidth memory for AI data centres. Samsung’s HBM bit shipments rose nearly 50 per cent from the previous quarter.
Yet investors were unimpressed. Shares slipped after the announcement, and the guidance missed Bloomberg’s analyst consensus of 108.7 trillion won. Much of the boom was already priced in.
The muted reaction spread: Samsung’s 783 per cent jump failed to lift Micron and other memory stocks on Thursday, as markets focused on rising bond yields and oil prices. Full third-quarter results are due on October 29.
