Pune sees dengue, chikungunya rise amid weather swings

Pune is seeing a rise in dengue, chikungunya, and viral fever cases. Doctors link the spike to fluctuating temperatures and high humidity as the monsoon withdraws.
Clear skies and humidity have pushed October temperatures 1 to 2 degrees above normal. Dr S. D. Sanap of the IMD in Pune said direct sunlight and moisture are intensifying the heat.
Dr Bharat Kadam of the Pune Doctors Association said weather swings stress the body’s temperature control. He said conditions favor the spread of mosquito-borne infections. Senior citizens, children, and people with diabetes or high blood pressure should take extra care.
Doctors advise residents to drink clean water and avoid long exposure to direct sunlight. They recommend masks and scarves outdoors and medical advice if symptoms persist.
The pattern is common during seasonal change. Sudden shifts between heat and humidity create breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Civic bodies are being urged to step up fogging and drain stagnant water.
