Major Indian ports record 8% cargo growth in Apr-Sep

India’s major ports recorded an 8 percent rise in cargo volumes in the April to September period of 2026. The growth reflects steady trade activity through the country’s key gateways.
Port officials say container traffic, bulk cargo, and liquid cargo all contributed to the increase. The rise comes despite global trade uncertainty and volatile freight rates.
High freight yields are attracting new container services to the India to Middle East route. Shipping lines are adding capacity as demand for cargo movement stays strong.
Kandla Port is separately courting global hydrogen firms for green-fuel development. The port wants to position itself as a hub for clean maritime fuel in the coming years.
The growth figures signal healthy trade momentum for the Indian economy. Ports are the backbone of India’s merchandise trade, handling most of the country’s exports and imports. Officials expect the trend to continue into the second half of the fiscal year.
