India joins 13 countries in push against excess industrial capacity

India and 13 other countries have called for global action against excess industrial capacity. They say overproduction distorts markets and hurts domestic industries.
The joint statement came after a meeting on the sidelines of the OECD Trade Committee talks in Washington. The countries urged all nations to end non-market policies that sustain overproduction.
The signatories include the United States, the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Australia, and Mexico. China, Brazil, Indonesia, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa did not sign.
The move builds on the G20 trade ministerial in Milwaukee, which failed to reach consensus on the issue. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said several economies had raised cases of capacity far beyond global demand.
The countries will work through new sectoral platforms to examine and act against excess capacity in key sectors. The statement targets structural overproduction backed by foreign government policies. More joint action is expected in the coming months.
