India and EU advance green shipping corridor for cleaner trade

India and the European Union are advancing plans for a green shipping corridor. The corridor will promote cleaner trade between the two regions.

The plan focuses on cutting emissions from cargo ships. Green corridors use low-carbon fuels and better port facilities to reduce the shipping industry’s carbon footprint. Shipping is a major source of global emissions.

The corridor fits into both sides’ climate goals. The EU is pushing hard on maritime decarbonization. India is developing green hydrogen capacity and wants to supply clean fuel to global shipping.

Kandla Port is already courting global hydrogen firms for green-fuel development. Major Indian ports recorded 8 percent cargo growth in the April to September period, showing rising trade volumes.

The corridor is still in the planning stage. Officials will need to agree on fuel standards, port upgrades, and investment. If it works, it could become a model for clean shipping routes worldwide. Industry experts say early investment in green fuel infrastructure will decide which ports lead the transition.
