India to release AI regulation consultation paper next month

India will release a consultation paper on AI regulation next month. IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the focus will be on safety and deepfakes.
The paper will seek public views on how to govern artificial intelligence. Safety risks, fake content, and the misuse of AI tools are expected to be the main themes. Deepfakes have become a growing concern in India, from fake celebrity videos to election misinformation.
India has so far taken a light-touch approach to AI rules. The government has said it wants innovation to continue while guarding against harm. The consultation marks a step toward a more formal framework.
The move comes as other countries tighten AI rules. The EU’s AI Act is already in force, and Denmark is moving to protect people’s faces and voices from AI replicas.
Industry and civil society will watch the paper closely. The balance between safety and innovation will shape India’s AI rules for years. Public comments will feed into the final policy.
