Eva Marie Saint, Oscar winner, dies at 102

Eva Marie Saint, the Oscar-winning star of On the Waterfront and North by Northwest, died on Tuesday at her home in Los Angeles. She was 102. Her representative Jeff Sanderson confirmed she died of natural causes, surrounded by family. Saint had one of the most famous debuts in Hollywood history. She won the Academy Award for best supporting actress for her first film, Elia Kazan’s 1954 classic On the Waterfront, opposite Marlon Brando. She was pregnant when she accepted the Oscar from Frank Sinatra and joked she might have the baby right there. Five years later she starred opposite Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest. Saint worked with major directors including Otto Preminger and Vincente Minnelli and won an Emmy for the 1990 miniseries People Like Us. Born on July 4, 1924, in Newark, New Jersey, she had planned to become a teacher before acting took over. She limited herself to about a film a year to raise her family. Saint was among the last figures of Hollywood’s golden era.
