Talarico leads endorsements in Texas Senate race

Democrat James Talarico has earned the endorsement of the Austin American-Statesman, one of Texas’ oldest dailies, in the U.S. Senate race. The paper’s editorial board praised his “seriousness of purpose” and record of bipartisanship.
It is Talarico’s second major newspaper endorsement after the Houston Chronicle backed him when Paxton became the Republican nominee. The El Paso Times, tracking endorsements statewide, has Talarico leading the field.
Ken Paxton, his likely Republican rival, has relied more on conservative media and grassroots support. The contrast highlights the two campaigns’ different paths to November.
With the race drawing national money and attention, every edge counts. The El Paso Times analysis is updated as new endorsements are announced through the campaign. Endorsement counts are one more measure of momentum in a contest both parties see as winnable.
Newspaper endorsements matter less than they once did, but campaigns still tout them as proof of momentum. Talarico’s team has featured the endorsements prominently in its advertising.
